An unexpected find

Not everything goes according to plan in the kitchen garden. And while it’s more fun to talk about success stories, I also want to share our mishaps with you. Here’s an example of ‘crop rotation somewhat gone wrong’.

This is our garlic and onion bed. ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Stuttgarter Giant’ have grown quite a fair bit, and seem to be doing well. However, if you look closely, you might be able to spot something else going on in this bed, something totally unintended.

Yep. There’s a third crop growing in there – potatoes! That’s because we grew late season potatoes in this bed last year. And evidently, we missed some during our harvest.

So, I guess the lesson to take away from this is: Must dig over potato beds before planting new crops!

Surprise!
