I was very excited to be at the inaugural Menu Food Awards last night, held at the Old Course Hotel. This was a chance to highlight the best of food and drink available in Courier Country – Fife, Dundee, Angus and Perthshire.
The food was a treat; a selection of the best chefs from the area had been asked to produce a course each using the best of local produce.
Before each course, we were given a video presentation of how it had been made, and immediately afterwards the food appeared over our shoulders. For anyone interested in food or cooking it was a real treat to see behind the scenes and then to be able to eat it straight away. For me, it really brought the dish to life to know exactly what I was eating, and to understand the level of care and attention that had gone into it.
Full list of winners and more pictures are available in today and tomorrow’s Courier. For me, the highlights of the awards were:
Coffee shop of the year – won by KitschnBake in Newport, well deserved, if you’ve not tried this before, you definitely should.
Street Vendor of the year – won by The Cheesy Toast Shack, who are regularly at Kingsbarns beach, and also at Bowhouse food market, amongst other foodie places and festivals. This is another favourite haunt, definitely worth a visit too.
Farm to fork award – won by Ardross farm shop. You may have seen noticed a recent mention of this place on my instagram feed – the kids and I love it for the sheer variety of local produce you can pick up there, we come across something new every time we visit. I particularly like that you can get an amazing selection of local meat – perfect for stocking up the freezer.
Judges choice – food and drink ambassador – Mary-Jane Duncan, of Kitschnbake. The thing that impressed the judges here was her outlook and approach. All of the staff at Kitschnbake are passionate cooks and bakers, but with no pretences. Mary-Jane has created a warm and friendly culture in the cafe which is evident in all of her staff and which is shared with every customer who visits. What are you waiting for, pay it a visit!
Thank you very much to the Courier for a great evening, it was inspiring.
